LOCAL NATIVES - GORILLA MANOR
To say that Local Natives are this year's Fleet Foxes isn't wrong, but not that right either. Local Natives are softer, brighter and lighter than their widely critiqued sort-of-counterparts. Gorilla Manor is a delicious debut that should be listened and loved for its own merits and there are 12 of them here; from the beautiful single 'Airplanes' to the epic journey of 'Stranger Things'. For fans of harmonic vocals, delicate guitars and gorgeous layers (and I bet there'll be a lot of you).
FAJ
You know about FAJ right? That's Fanny and Jessy as they are also known, and this duo have one of the coolest young labels coming straight out of London. They debuted their first range last year entitled 'I Hope You Die Soon' and they're also responsible for the infamous tee of the same name (and it's sibling, 'Suck It You Fuck') which I actually often find gets quite a warm reaction despite it's sentiment. This month they're showing their hotly anticipated sophomore collection for AW 2010 which no doubt will be full of their trademark wicked humor and edge. Definitely ones to watch.
LOST

Honestly, who isn’t? The sixth and final season of Lost, one of the best series ever created, just started and we are sure spending more time talking, reading and thinking about it than watching it. Well, from what we read some mysteries won’t be answered (the real meaning of the numbers, anyone?), but if there's something we've learned from accompanying Locke’s island friends (and enemies) is that the travel is always more enjoyable than the actual place it’s taking you to. Well, not if the smoke monster is trying to kill you.

Slow Blow
The latest station on the Drunky Town train line is in Sydney, Australia at a little club in the Spanish Quarter (actually it's just two Spanish shops next to each other on the same street or something like that in the CBD) called GoodGod, which plays host to soirée of the moment, Slow Blow. Word has it that in January, Karen O crashed Sydney's current cool kids party, but to be honest by that time everyone was too busy dancing and cutting loose in D-Town to care. And that's the true mark of a good time - when you find yourself twirling about without a care in the world. Or it could just mean you're trashed. Heh.
David Mitchell
You know those films where there are all these supposedly 'intertwined' stories and lives? Quite a cliché concept for both books and movies I suppose, but rarely does it really resonate in either medium. David Mitchell though (not the Peep Show one) manages to spin tales into tightly woven rugs that are quite fantastical yet believable, moving without being overly sentimental, eclectic and incredibly entertaining. He also writes straight narratives too, with just as much panache and verve. I just (re)read Number9Dream though any and all of David Mitchell's books are highly recommended...and he's got a newie coming out this year. EXCITEMENT.

O.N.E.

The new video for Yeasayer's latest single 'O.N.E.' makes me giggle so much. It's high budet, kinda new-new rave, and a big mixed bag full of other seemingly random hipsteryishy stuff.

The video sorta follows this guy - firstly borrowing a little from Alex Mac and the Matrix's Agent Smith's copying technique - who gatecrashes a warehouse party full of East London looking dress up types and a caged Yeasayer fronted by an artfully ghetto netted Anand, who, incidentally, reminds me of Sati (from the third installation of the Matrix trilogy) with his cute little bob-style 'do.

Also featured are a trio of supremely enthusiastic dancers glad in rainbow warrior drop crotch trousers, a Lady Gags-esque figure crying into her martini glass and a game/test scenario, played with neon lights and colours and 3-D shapes.

This track is really cool, and though I don't have much of a clue as to what any of the video means, it sure is fun to watch. Check it below:

Wolf Gang goes Back To Back

Wolf Gang

Seeing as I didn't really dig the original of 'The King And All Of His Men' from Wolf Gang (though what I did love was the super cool Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaur remix of it), his latest demo called 'Back to Back' came as a bit of a surprise. In fact, I quite love what the London School of Economics drop-out Max McElligott is doing on this track.

It's lovely, clean and refreshingly 'real'. I enjoyed his falsetto in the chorus, the piano is deep and quite dramatic, I like how the vocal sits back in the mix, I like that little noise that occasionally arcs across the song. Check it:

AND McElligott makes a pretty sick video too, check it below - it's a flickering montage of curated images saturated with colour, like a tumblr on crack. I'll be interested to see where Wolf Gang is going with all this...

Daydreaming with Kid Sister

kidsister2

I'm digging the Douster and the Style of Eye remixes of Kid Sister's latest track, 'Daydreaming' - which I've been listening to alongside the single on repeat for about half an hour, because 1) I really like the track and 2) I can't quite put a finger on any of them right now.

I think perhaps the reason for this is because both remixes keep most of the original elements, like the spirit of the beat and the euphoric atmosphere that makes the original track so addictive, before stripping it back a little bit and and veering 'Daydreaming' into their own individual domains.

I really enjoyed the single, which kinda sounds like a remix in itself, with it's super hooky line of 'Like I'm daydreaming again' plus Cee-Lo's uplifting bridge.

Style of Eye takes you on quite a seven minute journey, utilising Cee-Lo's hooky vocal, and implements a rubbery bass in some ravey territory.

Douster kicks it with some of those funk cadence in the horns coupled with misty synth action.

Tremulous Glasser

Glasser - on most excellent label True Panther - has piqued my interest for a while now since I came across her make a cameo on Tanlines EP, Settings (which, in fact, is released today).

Otherwise known as Cameron Mesirow, Glasser wields a voice as haunting and alluring as the mythical sirens that lured pirates of old to their watery deaths. 'Tremel' is as tremulous as it's name suggests; instrumentally at least, as Mesirow's vocal is choir pure and utterly bewitching.

Here are two equally brilliant remixes of 'Tremel' by Jamie xx and Astronomer - journeying and dynamic the both of them!!

And make sure you go grab the 12"/download from the Young Turks (on whom 'Tremel' is coming out in the UK) OK!? Go go go here.

Incidentally if you're in London, Young Turks and Dazed and Confused are throwing a par-tay to yay The xx being on the latest cover of the mag; there you can check Glasser herself, live, as well as Jamie xx, Romantic Three (who also have remixed 'Tremel') as well as a Young Turks DJ sets. Yewww! Get on that shit!

Foals' Spanish Sahara
foals_total_life
Foals

The hints that Foals have been dropping in reference to the sound of their upcoming album (due out May the 10th) have been a little scary; and I, like others, have been a bit worried about how this is all going to pan out.

So for me at least, when 'Spanish Sahara' dropped, it was a most pleasant surprise. A definite departure from their more aggressive, angular math-rock of Antidotes, 'Spanish Sahara' swoons and floats, with Yannis Philippakis working a lovely vocal.

The track is mellow, melodic and lovely. Rather epic really, as is the video. Foals are serious as they ever were; and this song finds them grave, sombre and bleakly gentle; with just a hint of their previously start/stop guitars having been sanded down to a more warm, subtle and less edged finish. Quite beautiful. If you haven't caught it already, check the video below:

Minimal and toying with percussion beautifully is the atmospheric and sensuous Mount Kimbie remix. Cop it below. As for the rest of Total Life Forever we'll just have to see won't we...

Get lost in the Bermuda of Kisses
kisses
Kisses

Say hello to Jesse Kivel and Zinzi Edmundson who together are Kisses, a disco-pop project from Los Angeles, of which Transparent is releasing the debut single of next month.

'Bermuda' is the result of Kivel having been a lone traveler penning stories about far flung destinations as a travel writer at some point, and Kisses' debut single is apparently about release and escape of his experiences as such. Chill and glowing, 'Bermuda' despite being a lightfooted track, is quite heavy on the cheese - I was skeptical about this in the opening bars. But seconds later, the vocals kicked in, the cheese in itself forgotten as I was charmed into a groovy submission.

A soft spoken and gently driven track, 'Bermuda' travels smoothly, uplifts and hooks you in; like a suave dance partner effortlessly, tenderly leading you around the dancefloor whilst the disco ball turns.

A limited edition 7" of 'Bermuda' is out on April 19th with a remix from Active Child too, so watch out for it. I'd love to hear some pumping remixes of this track...

Nestor's Seattle Diary #2

Hiya Nestor

So the Sky Larkin kids are still in Seattle in the excellent company of Mr. John Goodmanson cooking up another album. Nestor has been sending over some of his pictorial observations and writing some delectable little bits and bobs to accompany them (in case you're not up to date, check what Nest was doing last week).

Awoke yesterday morning to a much more familiar scene...Ah, the soggy Seattle we know and love! Kind of sad, because this is our weekend off and I was hoping for some sunshine, but this drizzle is what Seattle is all about!

I don't even know what this is about - nor do I care really - I only know that it and it's owner by proxy, are awesome. Not pictured is the DIY afterburner attached to the boot.

Just wow. He looks like you're recently deceased, closet-alcoholic serial-bigamist uncle telling you about those 'saucy parties' he went to back in 'the day'. Sure, his strangely animated eyes follow you around the room, but that's totally OK, just take it as a sign that he's watching over you from the spirit world, and occasionally watching you in the shower too.

Ha. I just wrote that without really reading it. Is it funny or just really dark?

Detecting Darwin Deez

darwin_deez_radar

I so wanted to not like this video. Despite Darwin Deez's 'Radar Detector' directed by Ace Norton being somewhat of a Michael Cera (Paper Heart datchu?) and Napoleon Dynamite mashup; full of earnest indie Americana...and I just couldn't help but like it. It actually made me (involuntarily) smile. Eww.

Not to mention a rip of that Walter Van Beirendonck tee with his hairy chest printed on it that I used to be weirdly drawn to even makes an appearance. It's a hipster's wet dream. Or a hipsters wet dream to pour haterade on. Or something.

It's of the variety that some of us might generally want to punch in the balls to prevent from procreating - except that both the track and the video are just so unself-conscious and sunny that you can't resist infection from it's cheery and grateful wonderment. 'Radar Detector' is lovely and catchy and really really sweet. Check it and vomit yourself up some sunshine today.

Radar Detector by Darwin Deez

'Radar Detector' will be out via Lucky Number on April 5th - and Darwin Deez is going to be touring London this month and with Everything Everything next month too. Check 'em.
