BEFORE TODAY by Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti
It doesn’t take much to make me feel stupid. Trying to find the words to describe the debut album of Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti at 4AD is just one of many examples I could give you. To me, ‘Before Today’ sounds like an album that Kevin Barnes could be recording if he loved goth bands more than funk ones. Or like the cold wave genre entering a multicoloured psychedelic stage instead of glazing at it's own depression. Don’t mind my threadbare examples; this is the album that will make it onto every interesting top 10 of the year and you don’t wanna miss it.
Nathan Smith
I can't resist (probably overpriced) basics-with-a-twist. My wardrobe, full of T by Wang, Oak, Bassike and yes, American Apparel is proof of this; and since in Australia, a new favourite has emerged in the form of Nathan Smith. His selection of supersoft tees, tanks and dresses have sucked me into buying multiples of a number of styles in different colourways. You just can't go wrong with these though! Addictively and endlessly wearable - and not in actual fact, overpriced in the slightlest - Nathan Smith is the way forward for your wardrobe.
Freaks and Geeks
I don’t think any series will treat teenagers the same way that Freaks and Geeks did almost 10 years ago. Although relying on every teen American cliché they could, this series was the closest thing to reality you could get whilst still being something fun and interesting to watch – cause, you know, life is boring. With bands like The Who, The Clash and XTC being either part of episodes or the soundtrack, this 80’s based cult show was short-lived (only 18 episodes), but long enough to enrich the careers of some young actors (i.e. James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Busy Philipps and, erm, Linda Cardellini) and is greatly missed. Can we have a movie about them meeting again in the 00’s?
Rong He
Once, a friend of mine wanted to take me to this 'cheap Chinese restaurant', situated in the heart of Liberdade, a Japanese neighborhood in São Paulo. When we got there the place was packed, but because it looked cheesy and kinda poor, I didn't want to wait it out. It took another friend for me to go back there and fall in love with it. Now, every time the mood for some freshly made noodles (you can watch the chief making the noodle dough through a window) framed in some horribly painted pink walls takes me, I go for Rong He. Did I mention the food is also incredibly generous and cheap?
The Selby Is In Your Place
The ultimate in peeping tom into other, cooler, more fashionable, richer, quirkier and more-hipster-than-thou lives is Todd Selby's The Selby. Having previously been an internet only voyeur's dream, Todd has just last month released The Selby Is In Your Place, a coffee table tome full of twee drawings, colourful interiors and people showering. Half of the images in the books are favourites from the website and the other is stuff he hasn't published online yet. So go check it out, maybe buy it if you can to make your crappy coffee table in your crappy apartment that little bit cooler with pictures of someone else's cool stuff.

Two Door Cinema Club in Canary Islands

two-door-cinema-club

The equation is quite simple: a dash of cuteness from Goodbooks, a dash of Phoenix's summery sound and three pink cheeked British boys to make you Kitsuné's latest sensation, Two Door Cinema Club. 'Something Good Can Work', the third single from Tourist History, is their most infection moment so far, with surprisingly upbeat drums for such sweet melodies - I suppose this is what it means when someone says 'summer love track'.

And if we hear a love summer song in 'Something Good Can Work', we see a summer video too. Directed by One In Three - who has worked with Bloc Party, Ellie Goulding, Wildbeasts and more - who took the three white boys out to tan, during a beautiful sunny day on the Canary Islands whilst shoot it from the most amazing angles imaginable. We hope, for the sake of their skin, they used lots of sunscreen.

Two Door Cinema Club - Something Good Can Work

On the single, we can find remixes from Crookers, Beatacue, The Twelves, Blamma Blamma and Ted And Francis, but we strongly recommend you to run away from the first two remixes and dive into the delicious remix from Twelves, which is also part of the new edition of Kitsuné #9, and Ted And Francis's, that extracts all the sweetness from the original and makes it more refined.

Feeling the shivers of anticipation?

Ed Banger's Jamaica

jamaica

When you are in one of the biggest electronic duos of the past decade you can do anything. You can release a collection based on clothes you already wear (no creativity necessary), you can record a staged tour DVD to impress other DJs (yes, you party harder than them), you can remix bands that you and your fans don't actually care about anymore just for the cash (I've heard U2's label pays lots and lots of money)...Yes, basically anything.

But the best way to spend your free time - after you've made yourself a tidy bit of money of course! We all like money - after all of that, is to take a year off and get interesting again.

That might have sounded a little dry, but in fact, I really admire the career choices that Justice has made (okay, so I don't *love* the U2 and Lenny Kravitz remixes) and now the French producers are at it again with a new move. From all the rumors about them releasing music under a new name et al, there's one project that really caught my eye: Jamaica.

Xavier de Rosnay, half of Justice, helped the boys from Pony Pony transition to Jamaica - only after they promised not to use any synths in the studio. And after reworking some songs from Pony Pony (which was probably scratched because of the band Pony Pony Run Run), they released their first single, 'I Think I Like U 2'.

Although we are not huge fans of the use of numbers instead of letters, we are totally into the sunny vibe proposed by the song. In fact, it's probably the freshest song we've heard in a while:  It's the sound of teenagers who weren't too bored to form a band like The Teenagers. Another example, Jamaica is basically what Van She should be (minus the looks. Let's be frank, the boys from Van She are way prettier).

As remixers, Jamaica are also quite interesting. They took the new Flairs single, 'Radio', added a helluva funky bass line, played with some scratches and spiced it up with reggae elements. I don't wanna say it, but I think I like it better than the original.

Ed Banger's new darlings are going to release the video for 'I Think I Like U 2' soon (guess who is going to direct the colorful and animated video?) and already found a place on the new Kitsuné Compilation. We expect fun things for them, and hopefully won't be disappointed.

Classixx x Jeppe x The Cobrasnake x Kitsuné

Classixx-video

"Do you really think you're still relevant right now?

I'm so passé, like, I'm surprised people even wanna talk to me anymore."

This conversation happened last Wednesday between a drunky IM // UR and Mark Hunter (aka The Cobrasnake) at the Adidas House Party in São Paulo. Even being the nicest guy we met lately, we all have to agree that Cobrasnake's photoblog was only special when created because it was one of the first around. And although it was one of those that started the hype of party photographers around the world, it's lack of technique or concept to make it go beyond - wait a minute...at least Mark is travelling around the globe partying while I'm at my computer writing about deepness and stuff.

But this text wasn't about this. This text is about how Cobrasnake's photoblog might be passé, but the man himself isn't. If you want proof you might want to check the two track EP Kitsuné x The Cobrasnake. Yes, one of the hottest labels around the world asked the partyman to shoot two videos for Classixx and Acid Girls new songs. And the results? Well, it lacks the same things as his photos... But the songs are great!

The Classixx's 'I'll Get You' features strong drums, bright '80s synths and Jeppe (ex-Junior Senior) on the vocals along some random French Danish girl saying things likes "sometimes you just sit there and think and nothing happens" - thanks to Christian Rosenberg for that! While Acid Girls's 'Wake Up' doesn't have a video out yet, but it has the bouncy Frankmusik doing the vocals and that should be enough by now.

Kitsuné x The Cobrasnake - or should we say Classixx x Jeppe & Acid Girls x Frankmusik? - will be out by the 1st of June.

Kitsuné Maison 7 - The Lucky One

kitsune_maison_7

Last time, with The Melodic One compilation, Kitsuné Maison introduced the world to artists like La Roux, We Have Band and Appaloosa; got us dancing once again with Fischerspooner and Lo-Fi-FNK; and made everybody's heart feel funny with songs from Ted & Francis and David E. Sugar. So there's absolutely no doubt that we are dying to listen to their 7th compilation, The Lucky One.

First, because it's got some ace new singles from bands like We Have Band and Golden Filter. And then there are the songs that we already know and adore like 'Something Good Can Work' from Two Door Cinema Club, 'Solo' from Chew Lips, 'In For The Kill (Lifelike Remix)' from La Roux and 'Lisztomania (Classixx Version)' from Phoenix. And finally all the songs from bands we don't know but we'll probably love. In Kitsuné we trust!

In order to celebrate the upcoming release of both Kitsuné Fall/Winter 09 collection and Kitsuné Maison 7 - The Lucky One, Loïc Prigent & Fabien Constant did a cool change-your-clothes-as-fast-as-you-can competition featuring some songs from the compilation. Cheap creative fun.  Check the video below and some of it's songs at the bottom.

Chew (Hot) Lips

I didn't even need to hear Chew Lips first single at Kitsuné to know that I would like it. Call me a sucker, but if producers like Tepr and David Sugar are remixing you, then there's a big chance that I will listen to your music. "Solo" sounds something like an 8-bit synthesizer forgot it's punk roots and got in touch with it's softer side; helped by some funk beats and radio-diva vocals laid on top. It's La Roux meets '70s.

Tigs (the singer), Will Sanderson and James Watkins (synths and beats) have been hyped up by everyone from Steve Lamacq ("The best demo of '08) to the Guardian; this contributing perhaps to their opening slots with acts like Howling Bells and The Virgins. For a band that was formed in the spring of '08 in London they're moving fast, aren't they?

But guess what: hype aside, they're hard workers. Word on the street is that they wrote ten songs in the first rehearsal alone. See kids, working is good for you! Talking about the buzz, their live presentation is also supposed to be epic; with Tigs going nuts whilst simultaneously controlling the crowd. So you better check their debut video and those crazy remixes to get the chance to say it out loud to your hipster friends: Chew Lips? Oh yeah, I knew about them already...
