BEFORE TODAY by Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti
It doesn’t take much to make me feel stupid. Trying to find the words to describe the debut album of Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti at 4AD is just one of many examples I could give you. To me, ‘Before Today’ sounds like an album that Kevin Barnes could be recording if he loved goth bands more than funk ones. Or like the cold wave genre entering a multicoloured psychedelic stage instead of glazing at it's own depression. Don’t mind my threadbare examples; this is the album that will make it onto every interesting top 10 of the year and you don’t wanna miss it.
Nathan Smith
I can't resist (probably overpriced) basics-with-a-twist. My wardrobe, full of T by Wang, Oak, Bassike and yes, American Apparel is proof of this; and since in Australia, a new favourite has emerged in the form of Nathan Smith. His selection of supersoft tees, tanks and dresses have sucked me into buying multiples of a number of styles in different colourways. You just can't go wrong with these though! Addictively and endlessly wearable - and not in actual fact, overpriced in the slightlest - Nathan Smith is the way forward for your wardrobe.
Freaks and Geeks
I don’t think any series will treat teenagers the same way that Freaks and Geeks did almost 10 years ago. Although relying on every teen American cliché they could, this series was the closest thing to reality you could get whilst still being something fun and interesting to watch – cause, you know, life is boring. With bands like The Who, The Clash and XTC being either part of episodes or the soundtrack, this 80’s based cult show was short-lived (only 18 episodes), but long enough to enrich the careers of some young actors (i.e. James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Busy Philipps and, erm, Linda Cardellini) and is greatly missed. Can we have a movie about them meeting again in the 00’s?
Rong He
Once, a friend of mine wanted to take me to this 'cheap Chinese restaurant', situated in the heart of Liberdade, a Japanese neighborhood in São Paulo. When we got there the place was packed, but because it looked cheesy and kinda poor, I didn't want to wait it out. It took another friend for me to go back there and fall in love with it. Now, every time the mood for some freshly made noodles (you can watch the chief making the noodle dough through a window) framed in some horribly painted pink walls takes me, I go for Rong He. Did I mention the food is also incredibly generous and cheap?
The Selby Is In Your Place
The ultimate in peeping tom into other, cooler, more fashionable, richer, quirkier and more-hipster-than-thou lives is Todd Selby's The Selby. Having previously been an internet only voyeur's dream, Todd has just last month released The Selby Is In Your Place, a coffee table tome full of twee drawings, colourful interiors and people showering. Half of the images in the books are favourites from the website and the other is stuff he hasn't published online yet. So go check it out, maybe buy it if you can to make your crappy coffee table in your crappy apartment that little bit cooler with pictures of someone else's cool stuff.

WE HAVE PROMO

we have band

We Have Band's Divisive

we have band

You liked the demos, you liked the EPs, you liked the gigs and then you hate the album - which leads you to hate everything about the band. What could be described as a hipster anthem is the truth in most cases of this Hype Machine generation of bands. Fortunately we have bands like We Have Band.

The British trio took a huge step from their demos to their debut album, WHB, aiming for an edgier and more adult sound that still leaves space for some party moments. And one of these moments is their newest single, 'Divisive'.

As the song kicks in, you are driven by a post punk track full of machine sounding synths, lazy synthetic bass lines, frenetic drums and a very groovy bass - plus Thomas WP's vocals are especially spooky here.

If you've been following WHB's career; you'll know they like to spend a lot of time making of their videos. After spending some days painting their faces for 'You Came Out', they went for a change-your-clothes-while-doing-some-weird-dance  for 'Divisive'. The result is very odd, cool and viral-ready.

The single also features four remixes - by Tom Staar, Carl Craig, French Fries and Flak Attack - which all sound very 90's and serious (a.k.a. not my cup of tea). We give you the Carl Craig remix as a teaser, we hope you enjoy it more than we do.

Filthy Dukes // Messages

Filthy_Dukes

Filthy Dukes have released a great album this year. It's called Nonsense in the Dark and is so full of hits that you wouldn't mind comparing them to Simian Mobile Disco, if you keep in mind that they are much more pop oriented. So pop that there are few electronic bands nowadays that can sound this pop and still be credible.

If you don't agree with me, it's probably because you have never heard 'Messages', their latest single. The song features vocals from English singer Tommy Sparks (why haven't we posted about him? I love his album) and has a massive italo pop sound that should do well in the charts as much it will do in clubs with the help of the remixes of Tronik Youth, Kris Menace, Burns, Brookes Brothers, We Have Band, Stop Making Me and the Dukes' own Kill Em All.

We only heard three of them until now (Tronik Youth, Burns, and We Have Band), and even though all the remixes share similar lengths (something around 5m20) they all sound really different from each other. Tronik Youth's is a robotic disco affair, and We Have Band's is more electronic and less weird than you thought it would be, while Burns is that electro remix that could've gone all maximal cliché, but thanks to some unexpected moves is quite good.

'Messages' got a video that reminds me of some of the classic late '90s electronic videos that has a guy with a light ball in his hand that makes him dance like an epileptic.

We Have Band - You Came Out

We-Have-Band

We are more than happy to live in the same age as a band like We Have Band.  Not only are they musically creative, but they also have been releasing the most innovating videos around. As we've been preparing you, 'You Came Out' is their next single; to be released on the 15th of June through Kill Em All with lots of remixes and one great cover (check some of this stuff here).

And according to the band, the video - directed by David Wilson in collaboration with Fabian Berglund and Ida Gronblom from Wieden + Kennedy - was "shot over 2 days and stop frame animated from 4,816 still images without a single moment of video footage!" And in every still the band had different make up running down their faces in the most exquisite way.

We Have Band - You Came Out

We Have Band also promised to upload every single still image on their flickr account, so you can see how difficult is to be creative these days! If you fancy it, you can make loads of cool gifs out of them to send to all your friends. Download the demo version of the song below, although this is one of the few cases in which the new version is better.

Disco Parroting We Have Band
cage_aviary_disco_parrot
It's Cage & Aviary's disco parrot, innit.

We told you a while back that South London duo Cage and Aviary also took their hands to IM//UR favourites, We Have Band, for a remix of their single. And here's their bouncey bassed, glass dinging and superlong interpretation of 'You Came Out'. It gives a nod to the track’s disco elements with a groovier and more laid back reinterpretation, cruisier than the more driving original track, Dede’s echoey vocal urging you to dance. And at around 8 minutes long, it’s a pilgramage; but one that keeps the kooky soul of We Have Band in tact, whilst still exploring the track in a different kind of outfit.

I M // U R loves We Have Band's exquisite dance songs. 'You Came Out' was the very first song we've heard from the band's re-release. It's an improved version that makes the bass sound more clear, the vocal more disco spooky and the unexpected whistle break more impressive - and we usually prefer the demos versions.

The song will be released via Kill Em All on the 15th of June featuring lots of remixes and We Have Band's magnificent cover of 'West End Girls' which I dare say is way better than the original by Pet Shop Boys. Of all the remixes (Clouded Vision, Stereogamous Bathhouse, The Lovely Jonjo, and Cage & Aviary), Clouded Vision's and Cage & Aviary's re-interpretations are the most impressive efforts - the former turned the single into a distorted electro song and the latter maximized the disco lines of the original.

But before officially releasing 'You Came Out', the band will feature a new song, 'Time After Time', on Kitsuné's 7th compilation as well as a Bloc Party remix that's part of a new version on their latest album, 'Intimacy', made up only of remixes from good bands like Mogwai, Filthy Dukes, No Age, Hervé and Phones. Such a bummer that Bloc Party went to shit...

Kitsuné Maison 7 - The Lucky One

kitsune_maison_7

Last time, with The Melodic One compilation, Kitsuné Maison introduced the world to artists like La Roux, We Have Band and Appaloosa; got us dancing once again with Fischerspooner and Lo-Fi-FNK; and made everybody's heart feel funny with songs from Ted & Francis and David E. Sugar. So there's absolutely no doubt that we are dying to listen to their 7th compilation, The Lucky One.

First, because it's got some ace new singles from bands like We Have Band and Golden Filter. And then there are the songs that we already know and adore like 'Something Good Can Work' from Two Door Cinema Club, 'Solo' from Chew Lips, 'In For The Kill (Lifelike Remix)' from La Roux and 'Lisztomania (Classixx Version)' from Phoenix. And finally all the songs from bands we don't know but we'll probably love. In Kitsuné we trust!

In order to celebrate the upcoming release of both Kitsuné Fall/Winter 09 collection and Kitsuné Maison 7 - The Lucky One, Loïc Prigent & Fabien Constant did a cool change-your-clothes-as-fast-as-you-can competition featuring some songs from the compilation. Cheap creative fun.  Check the video below and some of it's songs at the bottom.

We Have Band vs Solange: To twitter or not to twitter?

darren-we_have_band
OMG! It's Solange!

My favourite iced lollies in the world are Soleros. I always get a flash of a Solero when someone says Solange...But I digress; anyway YES! WE HAVE BAND's music is a million times better than Soler-ange of the House of Dere-ange (I still heart you Beyoncé), as someone commented on Darren's (who looks after Vocals/Drums/Percussion/Sampler in We Have Band) Facebook status earlier today.

WE HAVE BAND have been making waves in the UK and certainly their jam-packed international gig schedule (and how immensely difficult they are to actually pin down for more than fifteen minutes in one city) is some kind of indication that this trio from London are going places. Literally.

The mass musical exodus that occurs in London around this time of the year when all the wanna-bes and gonna-bes head over to the States to do the big Spring pow-wows and the festival circuit is a funny time. A good time for most, a bitter time for others. We Have Band I think, would be having a very good time.

They did SXSW. Apparently, so did Solange - in the observation fashion anyway. And Solange did We Have Band. Well, according to her twitter anyway.

solange-we_have_band
Solange in the We Have Band houuuuuse

Now the biggest question is, as posed by We Have Band on their myspace:

"We have to confess that we're beginning to feel the pressure to twitter. We couldn't really be bothered before but maybe we will.

Should we?"

Twit that shit!
Don't do it!!

And a quick community service annoucement: Even if WE HAVE BAND doesn't twitter, WE HAVE TWITTER (clickety click)!
